About the Outfitter...

Accompanied by an experienced professional hunter, a tracker and a wildlife veterinarian, the client enjoys a five-day safari, tracking a rhino on foot. During this safari the client enjoys all the thrills and excitement of a real hunt and more, stalking the rhino much closer than any rifle hunter normally would feel comfortable with, to the point where he can get a clear shot. The dart is shot using a 32-gauge rifle with a powder charge, immobilizing the animal within approximately ten minutes.

Once asleep, the rhino undergoes certain procedures such as photographs, measuring, ear notching and micro-chipping (procedures that are endorsed by the Endangered Species Protection Unit of South African Police Services as part of anti-poaching strategies). The wildlife veterinarian monitors the sleeping rhino while all these procedures are taking place. After the rhino is given the antidote and, needless to say, the hunting party has ensured that they are well out of reach, the groggy animal staggers to its feet.

All things considered, darting safaris have created a win-win situation for all. Some proceeds from these safaris go to the Endangered Wildlife Trust for its conservation projects, while the rhino owner and Professional Hunter also derive some income.

The client is able to complete his "Big Five" at a much more affordable rate, as SCI recognizes this form of hunting for the SCI record book. In addition, the rhino owner benefits as his animals are micro-chipped, thereby ensuring effective monitoring and anti-poaching. While traditional hunting only generates money from trophy animals, sustainable utilization of rhino cows and non-trophy animals is now also possible through

darting safaris, at affordable rates ($20,000-00 to $30,000-00 for traditional hunting, versus $8000-00 for darting safaris).

Cost of the Safari

The price of $8,000 is all-inclusive for a 5-day safari including insurance on the particular Rhino. Also included is a shoulder mount with the exact horn replica/duplication of the beast you darted.
