Kamchatka, Russia
"Brown Bear Hunting Adventure"

This is the best price for a quality 8-day hunt for the Russian brown bear (Ursus Arctos bearingianus). The hunting party will travel from Seattle through Anchorage (3.5 hours) to Petropovlovsk-Kamchatski (4.5 hours) which is on the Pacific side of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Departure dates are twice per week. When the group arrives in Petropovlovsk the "next day" after crossing the International Date Line, the group will be met by the outfitter. He will transport the group into Petro to exchange US dollars into rubles at a certified bank. This is to allow final payment prior to departure northward by vehicle to Milkovo for an overnight stay in a summer cabin. After arrival at

the cabin, a full meal will be served. The warmth of the sleeping bags will be welcomed after a hard day's journey from the US to Russia.

The next day the entourage will be transported to the various camps with two or three hunters per camp. This will provide each hunter someone with whom to speak English in the evenings and at breakfast during the trip. The guides and camp staff are very friendly and helpful.

There will be 6 days of actual hunting, which will be conducted only by fair chase standards:

For the spring hunt, the hunters should be physically fit enough to be able to walk 5 to 10 miles per day in the mountains with their own day pack. Lunches will be taken in the field
The fall hunts will be oriented along the streams and rivers where the bears are fishing for the ever-present salmon. The terrain and weather is very similar to that of Alaska
Upon receipt of deposit, a clothing and equipment list will be furnished

Why spend twice the money for an Alaskan brownie when you can get a huge Russian brownie and have the hunting story of a lifetime to remember?

The Following is Included in the Price:

Airport pickup by the outfitter and transport to Milkovo (approximately 3 hours drive north)
One night's stay in a comfortable cabin in Milkovo to include all meals
Transportation to field camps by tracked vehicle
One guide per hunter while hunting
  One translator per camp
A fully outfitted camp with tents, stoves, tables, tableware and stores of firewood
Field care of the trophy including: Skinning at the kill site, transport back to camp, fleshing the hide, splitting the lips, turning the ears and at least two saltings at camp to prepare the hide for transport back to the United States. The skull will be boiled and cleaned on site
A proper sack/bag for transporting the hide and skull back the United States
All licenses and hunting permits, CITES export permit, and veterinary certificate (There are no additional trophy fees connected with this hunt for the first brown bear)
Transportation from camp to Petropovlovsk in sufficient time for souvenir shopping and to out-process through Russian customs and board the international flight

The Price Does Not Include:

  Any airfares
  Tips and gratuities
  Any alcoholic beverages
Cost of any additional side trip to other areas such as the geysers
  Medical and trip insurance
Souvenirs (e.g., dolls, wool sweaters, walrus tusks with scrimshaw, lacquered wood products).
Any extra costs incurred before or after the scheduled hunt dates for motels, meals, beverages and other unforeseen expenses
Cost for a second bear (guide fee / trophy fee / appropriate permits)
Cost of conducting the Kamchatka snow sheep hunt or the moose trophy fee

The complete price for this bear-hunting adventure is ONLY $9,000!

If you have been monitoring the marketplace for these Russian Bear hunts, you will clearly see that this is absolutely the best price for the Russian Brown Bear since the country opened to foreign hunters 9 years ago. The bears that have been taken in years past are averaging between 7 and 9 feet squared. Dale Hedgpeth personally escorted a hunt in May, 1996, and the four bears taken did in fact range from 7 to 8 foot 10 inches. The largest skull measured 26 14/16, which tied the current number 3 in the SCI Trophy Book. Three of the four bears qualified for the record book. These are honest sizes, the myth that the Russian bears are bigger
than those in Alaska is just that -- a lot of media hype. The only thing that can be stated with confidence is that the density of bears is far greater than one can currently expect to find in Alaska, but they are definitely big bears! Of the Russian bears, the bears on the Kamchatka Peninsula are on the average a foot bigger than those found in the Magadan drainage to the northwest. In short, the Kamchatka bears are akin to the brownies found on Kodiak Island and the Alaskan peninsula, but at 80% of the price.

The companies that rushed into Russia with more enthusiasm than solid business practices (i.e., half-baked ideas and no contracts) are now out of business. Bankruptcies have occurred with regularity on both sides of the Bering Strait. A lot of the myths and stories about the Russian bear situation came from the inflated sales pitches, and subsequent defensive monologue, from these very same brokers.

Now, out of their ashes, rises the Phoenix...

The Russians are finally learning how to do business and the specific outfitter / contact we are using is very conscientious and speaks English very well. He understands the value of doing things correctly, so that he will be in business for the long run! He fully understands that making a large short-term profit is not as advantageous as being in business for the long term. He wants repeat business and referrals, and will do a very nice job to provide you a quality hunt.

Dale negotiated this contract for two years, and it was finally signed on March 1, 1996. Dale personally escorted the first client hunt with this Russian outfitter in May of that year, and was told they were the first people from North America to hunt with them. Dale has produced a 30-minute video of the trip to help potential clients plan their trips. As this video is one of eight other videos Dale has produced for his quality outfitters, serious hunters may contact him for a copy of this video.

The Fall hunt is conducted in September, when the Eurasian moose and the Kamchatka snow sheep are also available. You are invited to include these species on your bear hunt, but more time (up to 2 weeks) will be required. Please contact Dale directly for details on the combination hunt as soon as you decide for more information.

The prices for the individual species are as follows:

Second Brown Bear

$5,500 total ($3000 needed to commit)

Snow Sheep (Fall Only)

$12,900

Moose (Fall Only)

$4,550
