Sitka Blacktail Deer

The densely-forested Afognak Island lies just to the north of its more famous sister, Kodiak Island. It offers the same temperate climate and a wealth of wildlife in an unspoiled, remote setting. Float planes service the lodge itself from Kodiak and Homer.

Afognak Island is one of the few places in the world hunters can pursue the distinctive Roosevelt elk in substantial numbers. The terrain is lowland forest and mountains to 1000 feet in elevation. Many beaches and small bays are sheltered from most foul weather, providing ideal hunting conditions. Rarely will any hunting days be lost due to windy weather during the deer season. Temperatures are moderate, between 30 degrees and 50 degrees in both spring and fall.

Accommodations...

You'll relax by the fireplace in a comfortable, warm log lodge, where family-style meals and home-baked goods are served with old-fashioned "bush" hospitality. The camp also features clean and cozy log guest cabins with modern indoor plumbing. Each has wall-to-wall carpeting, queen and twin beds, and spacious living rooms with plush furniture.

TReliable hi-tech telephone and e-mail services are available for guest use and guests are also welcome to use the satellite-TV and VCR. This isn't the kind of "roughing it" you normally associate with bush-Alaska. A very nice sauna also welcomes you at day's end.

Other Activities...

Non-hunters of all ages will enjoy accompanying the hunter, as there is a wealth of things to do and enjoy. Clam digging, octopus hunts, hiking, visits to archaeological sites, photography and wildlife watching are but a few.

Sitka Blacktail...

Deer are plentiful and can be hunted from a cabin cruiser or sea skiff, as they come down from the rugged country to feed along the shore. The hunter can take up to four deer, and the chances of a trophy-quality buck are excellent. Deer can be hunted simultaneously with bear and elk at no additional cost except the tags.

The season runs from August 1 to December 31. Guided and unguided hunts are available. You can fly and hunt the same day for deer.

Cost

Guided Deer Hunts

$500

Unguided Deer Hunts

$250

Non-hunters

Roosevelt Elk...

The Roosevelt elk are found in substantial numbers here, in herds of 40-100 animals. There are three hunt periods: Oct. 10-19, Oct. 17-26, and Oct. 22-31. Permits are issued by drawing, and applications must be completed and in the outfitter's possession by May 20. Guided or unguided hunts are available, with all lodging, meals and boat transportation included in both types of hunts. A 6-day hunt is recommended.

If you are unsuccessful in the drawing for elk, the option exists for a special Registration Hunt between November 5 and 25, based upon the actual harvest of the drawing permit hunts.

Rainbow, steelhead, lake and Dolly Varden trout are abundant.

Waterfowl...

For the ardent waterfowl hunter, several of the colorful and hard-to-find sea duck species are found here. Waterfowling can be combined with any fall hunt at no additional cost except the state/federal duck-stamps. The prevalent species found there are: Green-winged Teal, Merganser, Harlequin, Golden Eye (both Common and Barrow's), Buffelhead, Mallard, Scoter (Common, Surf, and White wing), King Eider, Old Squaw, plus a smattering of others. No permit is required. The outfitter has the State Duck Stamps for purchase, but the Federal Stamp must be purchased before leaving Kodiak.

Bush Flights...

Out of Kodiak, there are various float and amphibious aircraft available. The reservations will be made for our clients after we know you arrival schedule in Kodiak. All attempts will be made to coordinate flights in order that clients may share expenses and to make the best connections. Additionally, hotel reservations can be made (at a savings to you!) whenever you have to stay overnight in Kodiak. The round-trip 3-passenger chartered float-plane costs are normally $650 for unguided hunters.
