Desert Bighorn

The Papago Indians of the Sonoran Desert, known as the best trackers in the world (certainly in the western hemisphere), named this area "The Land of the Giants" for the big mule deer that rule the foothills and bushland.

You will enjoy a challenging hunt for the antlered trophy of a lifetime, in some of the most interesting hunting sites in the world. This is true fairchase hunt for a deer on its own terms.

The Sonoran Desert is a vast coastal plateau that extends from the Arizona border south for approximately 600 miles, and from the Sea of Cortez inland for 100 miles. The soil, plants and weather have combined to insure the rapid growth of large antlers. This is the perfect habitat for you as well, as meals are true feasts of the finest Mexican and international cuisine prepared by experienced field cooks

About the Desert Mule Deer Hunt...

You will arise at 5:00 am, have an American-style breakfast, then head to the hunting areas with an assigned guide on a 1x1 basis. The hunt will be a combination of walking, horseback or vehicle. The guide will care for your binoculars, canteen and lunch.

You will hunt until sunset every day until you get your trophy. Back at camp you can clean up and enjoy a superb dinner to close out the day.

The Hunting Season...
Due to a recent change, the season now runs from early November to the end of January which encompasses the rut. Now January is, by far, the most popular month and, of course, books up the soonest. However, for years December has produced the most trophies.

Shooting Conditions...

In Sonora you will be hunting rugged country covered with cacti and tangled brush. There is no time to find a rifle rest; shots are normally taken quickly and offhand at distances of 50 to 90 yards. This environment is challenging, but the payoff is that it is truly remarkable habitat for the trophy mule deer.

Depart from home to Tucson or Phoenix to make an early afternoon connection on an Aeromexico flight to arrive in Hermosillo, where you will clear customs and immigration. You will be met by the outfitter's staff and transferred to the hunting areas.

You will hunt in various locations in the hunting area for 6 solid days of hunting. Be prepared to walk.

You will have the option to take a Coues deer for only $2,500 add on.

About The Coues Deer Hunt...

Coues Deer The majestic Sierra Madre mountains in eastern Sonora are home to the Coues whitetail deer, made famous through the writings of Jack O'Conner. This environment is characterized by elevations of up to 7500 feet, covered by oak and pine trees mixed with all types of cacti and "bush brush."

Although the Coues deer can be found in southernmost Arizona and reportedly in western Texas (not to be confused with the Del Carmen whitetail), this specific area is yielding consistent
record-book Coues deer. I took a B&C class buck with this outfitter myself in December, 1992.

The season generally runs from mid-Nov through Dec.

Itinarary...

Similar to the mule deer hunt, but one day shorter. There is nearly a 100% success rate on this hunt, affected only by the hunter's marksmanship ability and to some degree physical fitness.

Coues deer are a unique, small whitetail deer that inhabit rugged, mountainous terrain. They are quick and elusive and present a challenging target. Many a hunter has overestimated the range to these bucks because of the size differential compared to the deer they are used to seeing at home!

The Hunt...

This hunt is conducted just as Jack O'Conner described the mountain horseback hunts of years gone by. It is a combination of horseback and spot and stalking with lunch taken in the field. You will return to the camp at sundown to clean up and enjoy a magnificent dinner.

The mountain horses are gentle, strong and superbly adapted to the Mexican high country. The saddles are the most comfortable I have ever used since my first horse back ride 35+ years ago.

Shooting Conditions...

Shots are normally taken at 70 to 150 yards in mountainous terrain. There is time to get into a proper shooting position or take a rest on a tree or rock.

Coues Deer Hunt Costs: $4,000

The Price Includes: Does not include:

Airport transfer

Airfares
All accommodations in ranch-style houses   Processing of documentation
  American style breakfasts   Tips
  All services of camp staff

Firearms Clearance

The import permit must be applied for two months in advance! The client must provide the following to Hedgpeth's Adventures in Hunting to begin the process to obtain the firearms and various hunting permits to insure that all documents are available prior to your departure:

Passport photos: 10 total, black and white, 2"x 2"
Copy of photo ID (e.g., driver's license)
Letter from your local police department stating you are citizen in good standing

Serial number(s) of your firearm(s) and the number of cartridges you will be carrying

These documents must be submitted by September. An agency in Arizona will process the application and obtain your visa, firearm transportation permit, hunting license and appropriate game stamps. This process costs $500. This is a relatively minor expense and is worth every penny to avoid difficulties entering and leaving Mexico and bringing your trophies home.

Clothing...

Lightweight khaki or camouflage. In mule deer country; the temperatures are moderate (60 to 80ºF) by midday. For Coues deer, be prepared for cool mountain mornings and evenings (10 to 30ºF). It snows occasionally but warms up by midday. On either hunt a down vest or jacket, gloves, wool socks, and a hat are recommended. Leather gloves will make your riding through brushy country much more pleasant.

Bird Hunting...

The Hermosillo, Sonora area offers some of the northern hemisphere's most fantastic dove and waterfowl hunting. Please inquire if you would like more information and prices.

Gould's Turkey...

If you like turkey hunting and are looking for a Gould's turkey, then look no further because for $1,300 you can conduct a successful hunt for this hard-to-get trophy bird. As you may well know the Gould's turkey is the largest of all the North American turkeys. The season is during April and May. Call for more information.
