Newfoundland
"Woodland Caribou and Eastern Canadian Moose"

Location | Weather | Lodge | The Hunt | Accommodations | Costs

Newfoundland is a wonderfully unspoiled wild country, most beautiful in its vastness. This outfitter wishes to cater to those who appreciate natural resources and will help them in maintaining these resources as they are today.

Location...

This excellent hunting opportunity takes place in Northern Newfoundland in the White Hills, as this is the best opportunity for the major herd of the Woodland caribou and for Eastern Canadian moose. Clients may drive to a meeting point on Newfoundland or may fly into an airport where they will be met and driven approximately 20 minutes to the base area.

The Country and Weather...

The terrain is tundra - wet and boggy. The high country is rocky and barren with abundant blueberries, clumps of spruce, tamarack and occasional birch. Weather conditions vary between snow, rain, sun, and/or wind, and gear should be packed accordingly.

Lodge...

The Lodge is located in the center of a vast region of exceptional natural beauty. There are long stretches of sandy beach, rocky headlands that rise to incredible heights, and tiny outport communities tucked away in sheltered coves.

All main lodges have cooks on board. At camp, one guide is furnished for each hunter for each combination hunt and one guide for each individual hunt or a two on one hunt can be arranged at a lesser price. All hunts will be supplied guides as this is a requirement of the Provincial Government. That is one reason why this outfitter has such a long list of satisfied clients for over 14 years.

This region is the home for herds of trophy woodland caribou, big black bear and the ever-present eastern Canadian moose. The woodland caribou are truly trophy animals and the numbers in the interior wilderness are the highest. The caribou kill with this outfitter has been 100% successful for the last 2 years at the Tuckamore Lodge.

At the lodge where moose and bear are hunted, the success rate has been 90% for both.

2001 SEASON

September 13 to October 31

Bow Hunts: two weeks prior to Rifle.

Rifle hunts always start the second Saturday in September.

The Hunt...

Game is usually spotted from a distance by glassing an area. A stalk is then made and shots are taken between 100-300 yards. The animal is then dressed out and the meat and trophy brought back to camp where they are then taken care of in greater detail. On both the regular hunt and on the longer trophy hunt, the hunter has his own personal guide. There is a 96% success rate for eastern Canadian moose.

Woodland caribou were first established as a sub-species by the Boone and Crockett System and later adopted by the Safari Club International as a separate category for the purpose of record keeping based on geographic distribution and antler size and shape. The Mountain caribou from the Canadian Rockies and the Central Canadian barren ground caribou from the northwest territories are the two other varieties that are also considered woodland caribou strictly by zoologists.

The woodland caribou found on Newfoundland is a medium-sized caribou with mature bulls weighing 350 to 450 pounds. It has the smallest antlers of any caribou with the single exception of the tiny Arctic Islands or Peary caribou, but the Woodland is a handsome animal with antlers that are divergent, with many points, without enjoying great length. Its color is generally much darker that its nearby cousin the Quebec-Labrador caribou. The neck and mane are white which makes for a very striking mount for any trophy room. Hunting for these respected trophy animals is generally the attractor species to get hunters to go the Newfoundland. It can be combined with a very high degree of success for the Eastern Canadian moose that is also a separate record book entry in both the SCI and B&C books.

Accommodations...

The camps are self-contained with hot and cold running water, shower, flush toilets, electric refrigerator, full-time cook, telephone and top-notch guides to help make the sportsman’s dream come true.
