This opportunity is being made available to sport hunters due to the need to remove older bulls from the herd as they become too aggressive, too difficult to handle, and capable of causing injury to the rest of the herd. Younger bulls are retained for next year's breeding cycle. Brief
History of the Bison... Prior to the arrival
of Europeans, 50 million bison populated the vast central plains. Intense
market hunting for hides during the twenty years following the Civil
War left fewer than 1,000 animals alive. Due to excellent game management,
today the North American population You will have a guide, but you may make your own decision on which mature bull to harvest. The cows and calves mingle in large herds, while the older bull will be found in small bachelor herds of 3 to 20 animals or hidden by themselves in small valleys away from the big herds. These bulls will be found on pastures of virgin short-grass of up to 2,400 acres. This is not an enclosed or "behind-the -fence" hunt on small pastures that characterize so many of the other bison opportunities. This is as open range as it gets out West! Hunting Dates... The hunting period will begin in November and will extend to 15 January. A reservation will be confirmed with a deposit of $650 for your choice of dates, on a first-come-first-served basis. Please indicate alternative dates for hunts that will fit your schedule. Dale Hedgpeth of Hedgpeth's Adventures in Hunting can make arrangements to be on site for groups of 4 or more to accompany the hunters and personally oversee all details during the hunting period. This would include airport pickup and transportation to the ranch and back. You are allowed to retain three parts of the bison as trophies - the skull, which can be bleached and displayed; the cape, which can be mounted full shoulder; and the remainder of the hide, which can be tanned as a "robe" or rug for the trophy room.
