Big Wyoming Bull Elk

The Big Horn Mountains are in the north-central part of Wyoming and are legendary when it comes to finding big trophy-sized Bull Elk. In Oct 2003, our company located and visited a privately owned ranch that had not been hunted commercially for over 30 years.  The Outfitter was new in the business and told us that he had "lots of 6x6 bulls”.  We had to check it out.

We were there for 4 days in late October-November 2003 and observed three trophy bulls taken in a 72-hour period.  It was strictly fair chase in each case.  The hunt started on 30 October in a snowstorm with a very old Pronged-horned Antelope with 14-inch horns taken the first day..

The next day was clear and two Bulls were taken as we drove up the foothills of the Big Horns.  The shots were 350 yards initially and 425 for the last shot.  One bull was a very large symmetrical 6x6 and the second bull was an 8x9 trophy!  The next day was spent getting the meat out.  On the third day for elk, a very wide 6x6 was taken just before dark.  Results were three large bull elk in less than 72 hours.  The Outfitter was absolutely correct in his ability to produce 6x6 bulls on this ranch.  The last two seasons have been just as productive.  This is a goldmine of an Elk hunt!

The hunting clients must be in shape to walk in the mountains.

Drawing...

As you may know, Wyoming is a drawing state for non-residents for all species.  This process can be done over the Internet by going to: http://gf.state.wy.us and following the series of prompts to printout an Application.  You will have to mail it so as to be in the State Office by 31 January!

The Non-resident Elk Application Fee is $400+.  The Game Management unit to submit for is #45.

Roosevelt Elk
The drawing is held the last week of February and you can find out your success on the web page for the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish.  If you were not lucky, they will return your money by check immediately. The good news is you will build Priority Points for each year that you submit and are not successful.
