New Caledonia
"The Hunt for Rusa Deer..."

Guiding | Season | Rifles | Booking Conditions | Hunt Price | Travel

Rusa Deer New Caledonia has long been regarded as the number 1 trophy producing Rusa deer country in the world. A French territory with a population of 170,000 it is situated slightly north of the tropic of Capricorn (about the same latitude as Townsville, Australia). In flying time, it is approximately the same distance from Sidney, Australia as New Zealand--3 hours. The Island is 300 kms long and 50 Kms wide (N.B., 100 kms = 62 miles) surrounded by crystal clear ocean and coral reefs. Its clean, palm bordered beaches, ideal climate and huge
population of deer makes this a hunters dream come true. There are few other places in the world where a hunter can see so many trophy deer in a days hunt. It is truly a tropical paradise in every respect. This country offers the hunter a wide range of excellent mature trophies. The experienced and not so-experienced hunter will gain much delight selecting the trophy of his choice from what must be regarded as the best deer hunting that is available anywhere in the world. Disabled hunters will also find shooting large trophy is practical in New Caledonia

The 1998 trophy season again was a resounding success. The hunters who participated in the '98 season enjoyed 100% success which has been the case for the past several years since the hunts have been offered in this region.

The average length of the trophies taken is around the 33-34-inch mark, however, trophies have been taken well in excess of this length and several have placed in the top ten for SCI.

Hunting is conducted on a variety of the best private farms in the country. Some of the private farms are 8000-10,000 acres each. The owners of the farms are very trophy conscious and proud of the quality animals they offer. Sole Hunting Rights and careful management of each herd will ensure the high quality of trophies continues. Some seasons do not produce large trophies like other seasons due to drought conditions; although this is uncommon, the hunter must be aware of the fact that it can happen.

Guiding...

All guiding will be done by the outfitter and his staff. He will be there at all times to supervise the hunting. All hunting will be done on a 2x1 basis which presents no problems at all.

Season...

The season will run from July through to late August or early September. This is the rutting period when the stags are very vocal and offers you the best possible chances of taking a large trophy. Like previous seasons, some of the largest trophies were taken on the first and last hunts of the season so the quality of your trophy does not really depend on what week in the season you select or are allocated.

Rifles...

Scoped rifles in .270 caliber are furnished. Permits for your rifle will be made available for the season of 1999 if you wish to take your own firearm into New Caledonia provided the current laws remain in effect. No military calibers allowed! If you wish to bring your own firearm the suggested caliber is .270. This caliber is chosen because ammunition is available in New Caledonia for it. The outfitter will purchase the ammunition. You are not permitted to import personal ammunition!

Booking Conditions...

No booking is effective until a deposit of $1500 USD is received. Deposits are non-refundable. Balance of hunt payment is to be paid upon arrival in New Caledonia. Cash and travelers cheques will only be accepted by the outfitter. Receipt of deposit is acknowledgment by the hunter that he/she understands all the rules and regulations included in the hunt contract. The outfitter accepts no responsibility for accidents that occur on safari. Travel insurance is available through Hedgpeth's Adventures in Hunting for a nominal fee. Clothing lists and further instructions will be sent once a deposit is received.

Hunters are reminded that only cash or travelers cheques are accepted in New Caledonia. No personal cheques or bank drafts are acceptable. If you are contemplating taking an additional trophy you must bring the appropriate amount of cash or T-cheques.
