Nestled in the picturesque Mokai valley, in the southern portion of New Zealand's North Island under the shadow of the Ruahine Mountain ranges, lies one of hunting's best kept secrets - New Zealand's best Wapiti hunting location. This outfitter has specialized in hunting Wapiti because of his utmost admiration for them as the ultimate deer species to hunt in New Zealand.

The challenge of luring a mature bull out of the timber during the rut makes a great

"once -in-a-lifetime" experience. The countryside is varied and long shots to test the skill of the dedicated and skilled rifleman also occur with regularity.

The management policy of not harvesting immature bulls means that each year a large number of bulls reach their top trophy potential. The classic 6x6 bulls are common, but the outfitter wishes to share the challenge and joy of taking the exceptional trophy.

This hunt is recommended to be booked for a minimum of 5 days. This makes it an ideal add-on to the traveling hunter's itinerary for other species available either on North Island such as Red deer, Sika deer, and Fallow deer or on South Island for Tahr and Chamois.

The hunting season is March 1st to August 15th with the peak of the rut being the first week of April. The hunt is based in a modern well-equipped 3-bedroom lodge from which your guide will take you hunting each day using either an all-terrain vehicle or on horseback. Furthermore, you can fly by helicopter to the outfitter's remote hunting chalet in the Kaimanawa Ranges to hunt the elusive Sika deer.

Other activities can be arranged such as duck hunting and trout fishing (in season) plus turkey hunting, or non-hunting exploits like skiing, river rafting, golf, and various local tours.

Hunting Season...

Firearms...

Recommended cartridges from .270 to .338 are best. Range facilities are available to reconfirm your zero after traveling. Rifles are available on request. (N.B., The Tourist Firearms License must be obtained at a cost of $25NZ from the police at the airport in Auckland upon arrival. The process takes from 15 to 20 minutes and is co-located at baggage claim before processing through Passport Control and Customs).

Clothing...

Weather conditions vary from fine frosty weather to heavy rain and occasional snow. Good quality warm, comfortable and waterproof clothing and boots that are broken in properly are required. There is a Swandri Outlet in Taihape which stocks the traditional wool "Swannie" pullovers found only in New Zealand.

Domestic Travel...

Once International travelers arrive in Auckland, they may either take the scenic and restful train or may fly. The train trip takes approximately 6 hours to Taihape (pronounced "tie-happy") where you will be picked up by vehicle. This is very comfortable and should not be missed as the scenery is beautiful and the cost is minimal compared to the plane flight. For the client on a tighter schedule the domestic flight from Auckland to either Palmerston or Wanganui is the way to go. The vehicle ride to the lodge is 2 hours through very beautiful countryside.

Taxidermy & Export Services...

Your trophy will be forwarded to a qualified taxidermist who will either prepare your trophy for export or complete the trophy mount on site. Obviously the taxidermy charges and shipment expense are not included in the cost of the hunt.
